NCAA Men's Basketball: First Four Recap

The bracket of 64 is finally set with the first four games out of the way. The teams are not final four prospects but still it was nice to see some games with a lot on the line.

The first game of the first four was a blowout with the experienced Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles defeating the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights by over thiry points. The Eagles will go on to play the UNC Tar Heels. I don't expect FGCU to go very far.

The second game was also a bit lopsided. with the Wichita State Shockers beating the Vanderbilt Commodores by twenty points. Wichita State has had some success in the past and could defeat the Arizona Wildcats in the first round. The Shockers could be a cinderella story this year.

On the second day of games, the two competitions were much closer and I got my first predictions wrong. The Holy Cross Crusaders went down to the with the Southern Jaguars. The Crusaders won by four points near the end of the game. I'm not sure that Holy Cross will beat the top ranked Oregon Ducks but it would be interesting if the Crusaders pulled off an upset.

The final game of the First Four was between the Michigan Wolverines and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Wolverines beat the Golden Hurricane by five points. Michigan will have a tough time moving forward since they have to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the first round. Michigan was an unlikely pick to even be in the tournament.
Now with the brackets set, I will be frantically making picks before the morning deadline. The first game between Duke and UNC Wilmington will start a little after noon. I'm excited to see how the first round games play out!
